Thoughts turn to our summer holiday just after Christmas Day,
And a lovely place in a region many million miles away.
The flight will take six months but is always worth it at its end,
And all the while the journey will to us home comforts lend.

Then having enjoyed brief kinder climes, we’ll return to travel’s start,
Out along the rebound route, from its solace too soon depart.
This may seem like a major trek, but we do it every year,
And in so doing, years’ seasons come and go then reappear.

In fact it’s not just us who takes this journey to and fro,
It is the very same destination to which we all for summer go.
For it’s the distance we must travel to get just halfway round the sun,
To that spot in space devoted to three short months of warmth and fun.

Once again ensconced in Christmas, give some thought to where you are,
Since long we left strong sunlight, the distance travelled, just how far.
As we again embark on the steady course to take us starlit back,
Cleared again for takeoff along Earth's solar system track.

The distance between summer and winter is about 292 million miles!
