Are We There Yet?

Last year I booked my summer hols just after Christmas Day,
To a lovely place in a region many million miles away.
The flight will take 6 months but will be worth it in the end,
And all the while the journey will to me home comforts lend.

Then having been to sunny climes, I’ll need to head the same way back,
Yes, out along the same route and its 6 month homeward track.
This may seem like a major trek, but I do it every year,
Enjoy the prospect as I travel that summer’s welcome I’ll soon hear.

In fact it’s not just me who takes this journey to and fro,
It is the very same destination to which we all for summer go.
For it’s the distance we must travel to get just halfway ‘round the sun,
To that spot in space devoted, to 3 short months of warmth and fun.

Once again enjoying Christmas, give some thought to where you are,
Since Earth long left its summer; the distance travelled, just how far.
As we then embark on the steady flight to take us slowly back.
Cleared again for takeoff along Earth's Solar System track.
