Chance Encounter

Chance Encounter

It was a chance encounter, years ago,
Not planned, quite unexpected.
With someone I would never know,
But my life has since affected.

A crowded Saturday coffee shop,
And nowhere else to sit.
Fateful by me she would stop,
A presence bright, all sunshine lit.

She kindly asked if the chair was free,
Then graceful took her place.
And thoughtful brief regarded me,
With her darling dreamy face.

Small talk turned into conversation,
How the day had brought us there.
Explaining both our situation,
Spare with detail as we dare.

Cups though empty, we chatted still,
Enjoying the little each shared.
And a lovely warm empathetic thrill,
I think between us briefly flared.

A natural end to our converse came,
And both stared a longer stare.
Stuttered our fumbling farewells same,
Then she was gone from sitting there.

We didn't use or share our names,
Or identify each to the other.
Played no obvious flirtatious games,
Just enjoyed being with another.

I've never seen her there again,
Though I've been back often since.
Yet hope, I still there entertain,
The moment real, self try convince.
