Dreamers' Art

I'm lain relaxed on soft white sand,
Above: bright sun; blue sky.
My skin is warm and lightly tanned,
And distant, seabirds cry.
Turquoise water; coral sea,
Like a whisper, laps the shore.
Long palm-lined beach and only me,
How could I wish for more?
Beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep,
I wake up with a start.
To realise I've been asleep,
My island: dreamer's art.
The alarm clock most time little said,
In heralding the day.
Had chased the world within my head,
And blissful sleep away.
I strain my eyes through semi-light,
And fumble for the snooze.
The next half hour would be a fight,
But one I'd have to lose.
No sooner to return I've tried,
Than the clock again is sounding.
Further solace is cruel denied,
By the new day prodding, hounding.
And then the point of no return,
It's either now or never.
A shift to work, a wage to earn,
I rise to day's endeavour.
