Handshake

I've been searching for the present,
But does this state in truth exist?
A thing so evanescent,
For it I've looked, and ever missed.
It's supposed to lie in worldly time,
Between the future and the past.
But in which am I writing this doodle rhyme,
And how long does it even last?
For it doesn't seem to exist at all,
If I try to pin it down.
Seems not to have a boundary wall,
On time’s journey, not a town.
Where do the future and past divide,
And where the present might then slot in?
Where in between them does it hide,
Where do each end and next begin?
The future ticks towards us each,
But doesn't stop, just ticks on by,
At no point does it halt to a present breach,
Instead, it will by us fly.
So is the present just a moment where,
There's a handshake of these two?
Where the past and future a second share,
Between them create an instant new.
But we need a name for the here and now,
For time we sense as fluid yet stable.
To explain where it is we live, somehow,
As best as we are able.
And of course, we'll continue to use this term,
Which explains away the doubt.
Though never can we prove its existence firm,
So true present we live without.
