Heartbeat

Each heartbeat seamless future brings,
Through brief present from the past.
As tenuous its short reach clings,
Ever one twitch from its last.
Our film-reel lives belie the fact,
That we're a sweep of single frames.
Our hearts keep the celluloid intact,
Against another’s patient claims.
For whilst tallying each new granted beat,
And by it flourish, thrive and grow.
A repeated sudden end we cheat,
Keep up the curtain on life’s show.
The blood which races through our veins,
Is its sure measure of success.
Pulsating through their lumen lanes,
Our life’s elixir no less.
Its footfall can though hesitate,
Next step as if deciding.
A momentary stop and wait,
Brief flutter of fate providing.
Then other times it skips ahead,
As if quick chasing its full quota.
Towards a dwindling total led,
By its accelerating motor.
How many beats do its chambers hold,
As the measure of its span?
How long will it yet expand and fold.
To where a point no longer can?
