Heaven on Earth

My window, what a marvelous view,
Across the southern sea.
I used to dream that out I flew,
But know not where I'd be.

The horizon was the furthest flight,
Out into this great ocean.
As this had been my only sight,
Beyond, I'd not a notion.

Until that is and quite by chance,
On a breeze its music came.
Somewhere, from that wide expanse,
An island called my name.

A lilting melody drew my soul,
And Naomi took my hand.
To a life from heaven I'm sure it stole,
With which to bless its land.

Out further than I'd ever dreamed,
Beyond what I had hoped.
A fantasy fulfilled it seemed,
As from deep blue it sloped.

Tropical mountains pierce low cloud,
Their clothing lush and green.
Palms behind white beaches crowd,
Such beauty I'd not seen.

Coconuts lie scattered round,
In a scene I know so well.
Of a paradise from shipwreck found,
That children's stories tell.

The air as fresh as a wind has blown,
Holds the smell of summer flowers.
Their scent on balmy currents sown.
And nothing its sweetness sours.

Surrounded by a broad lagoon,
Its water still and clear.
A reef, its calm from waves maroon,
Until high tide draws near.

The shallow water; transparent, warm,
Reveals its life and features.
Providing harbour in a storm,
For its myriad of creatures.

From lagoon-reflected light blue sky,
Shines a hot but welcome sun.
Its bent, to drink the island dry.
With rain is soon undone.

Heavy showers quick quench its thirst,
As streams run from the hills.
A short and unexpected burst,
Its needy cup soon fills.

Richly coloured songbirds call,
In a euphony of chatter.
Flocking at a waterfall,
They bathe and drink then scatter.

The native people take life slow,
Choose not to run its race.
And, never having far to go,
Enjoy a gentler pace.

Dressed in colours of a south-sea-scape,
Fresh flowers adorning hair.
Portly bodies, pareus drape,
With feet more often bare.

Their spirit through rhythm and song express,
Life's harmony of parts.
Its notes your very soul caress,
In a joining of their hearts.

Its melody, a warm breeze charms,
To escort it over water.
And welcome all with open arms,
A trade wind as its porter.

Sunset in this peaceful place,
Is like a slow and gentle sigh.
From a sun whose disappearing face,
Colours quiet untainted sky.

Fishermen grace the cooling sand,
In a common evening scene.
Silhouetted waterside they stand,
It's a picture so serene.

I've never quite known a calmer night,
Such quiet, or cleaner air.
A moon and stars so clear and bright.
As I found whilst way out there.

But all good things come to an end,
And so my island stay.
I hope its spirit again will send,
To draw me back one day.

Too soon and it was time to leave,
This south pacific shore.
In heaven on earth I must believe,
And here so, never more.

My window, what a marvelous view,
Across the southern sea.
Today I dreamt that out I flew,
But knew just where I'd be.
