Night Fright

Night Fright

A hidden world of sound awakes,
Unnoticed during day.
A different form at night noise takes,
As awake in bed you lay.

The slightest creak can stir the mind,
And you think your house is host.
To all that you would fear to find,
A monster or a ghost.

Could that be steps advancing,
As you listen not quite sure.
Towards a shadow glancing,
Almost too much to endure.

You know it's just old floorboards,
Or a ceiling timber cooling.
Giving up the heat it hoards,
Your imagination fooling.

A moth around the landing light,
Or a tap that's dripping slowly.
The sighs and rattles of a windy night,
Are nothing bad, unholy.

So next time that you hear a sound,
Just try remember this.
And ignore the noisy battleground,
Or a good night's sleep you'll miss.
