Sea and Sky

How pleasing to a cluttered eye,
No world beyond them seeming sensed.
An intersecting ocean and its sky,
When by no land are either fenced.

Just water, waves and wild wet wonder,
Uninterrupted sky above.
Deep ocean and all which lies just under,
Nature's marriage I with deep sense love.

Glaring path, sea-surface sun,
Guide towards sky-station source.
Relationship here pure one on one,
Raw force meets other force.

Clouds with wind air currents play,
Conspire with wave-bound sea.
To sudden change the weather's day,
Each to the others dealt decree.

And held within their uncertain care,
Are souls which upon each sail and soar.
This vast long-distance travel pair,
Conveying wanderers shore to shore.

These ambivalent, flat and spacious planes,
Each belie all nature's worst.
Primordial power each full retains,
And with a temper have been cursed.

With respect we treat this powerful pairing,
For to subdue is not a choice.
As we exploit each with our vigilant daring,
Pay heed to their vehement voice.

They represent a world we don't control,
Of each, authority we have none.
A state for which there is no parole,
Ever here and yet when we're gone.
