The Linnet

Cast my ashes to the sea,
Not a dungeon of the dead.
No graveyard dark and dank for me,
With tended flower bed.
Cast my ashes to the wind,
Not a sacred plot of earth.
Don't punish me thus for having sinned,
Nor depreciate my worth.
Cast my ashes to the moors,
Not a tiny trammel tomb.
To where in life my spirit soars,
Not a garden full of gloom.
All my life from the earth I've sought,
The freedom of a Linnet.
So when finally by death 'tis bought,
Don't bury me down in it.
