Summer Sigh

Summer Sigh

It's as if the year's work here is done,
As summer signals its arrival.
A long race now is finally run,
And of the year's best, a revival.

The tranquillity of its afternoons,
Blue sky, scant woolly cloud.
Light gentle breeze each clump maroons,
Unlike the winter's denser crowd.

A calm descends of languid light,
Days long and unconstrained.
Their start and end now out of sight,
Time to seeming stand-still gained.

Contented birds have calmer calls,
Assured that for a while.
The engine of year's cold brief stalls,
Gives way to the sun's warm smile.

It's as if the year now quietly sighs,
Content at all achieved.
The hard work done and this the prize,
To have made it, due relieved.
