Winter Sunset

An afternoon, sun warm and bright,
Air winter-fresh and clear.
Gracefully submits to night,
As eventide draws near.
The sun shines with declining strength,
And daylight starts to fade.
Its shadows, with increasing length,
To moonlight meekly trade.
The earth gives up its short-loaned heat,
And all it has to borrow.
The sun, with chattels, its day complete,
Takes leave until tomorrow.
Sweeping up at close of day,
A breeze begins to blow.
Hurrying its things away,
Towards the western glow.
The horizon soaked in flame-red dye,
Its colour growing stronger.
Briefly warms the winter sky,
But soon it is no longer.
The Moon ascends to take its place,
And remind not far away.
That the sun which shines upon its face,
Soon brings another day.
